Notes from a Guitar

by Robert Zimmermann

A single tear
descends his
aged
skin in rivulets.

Collecting just above
the jaw line,
a tiny trickle
takes a doomed flight
toward Earth.

Fingers move slowly,
methodically.

Notes from a guitar
sing
through the hills
and valleys,

washed
with sadness.

Finding Lichgates #BlogTour – How I Found My Lichgates into Ourea

Heyo! S. M. Boyce here. I’m on this cozy blog today as part of my Finding Lichgates Blog Tour. My hosts are so awesome for letting me show you the stories of how some of my fans found Lichgates and the other books in the Grimoire Saga.

So, for those of you who aren’t familiar with the series, I think I should explain what a lichgate is. A lichgate is a portal that ties our world to the terrifying and beautiful world in my Grimoire Saga called Ourea. Lichgates can be found in remote places, and when you walk through a lichgate, the land you cross into is not what you would see if you’d simply walked around the portal.

For many fans, stumbling upon the first book in the Grimoire Saga is much like stumbling through a lichgate. That is why this tour is all about the fans and how they found their first lichgate into the world of the Grimoire Saga.

To see more Finding Lichgates Stories check out the blog tour schedule.

Meet Robert Zimmermann. This is his Finding Lichgates Story:

I first discovered the book Lichgates almost randomly back in early 2012, through Twitter. I was just starting to explore the world of Indie books, starting my blog, and starting to review the books I read. I don’t recall exactly how I found S.M. Boyce on Twitter, but I’m glad I did. It was probably through following one author, then another, and so on.

I looked into the book a little bit, but fantasy isn’t always my cup of tea and I was hesitant. Eventually though, the book kept popping up on my feed. People I followed seemed to be enjoying it and I was enjoying following Boyce’s Tweets. She always tweeted out great questions to get discussions started and she interacted with potential readers in a great way that not many other authors, even that that time, were doing.

Not too long after this, some little contests started happening and that drew me in a little bit more each time. Intrigued by the author and what I’d heard of the book, I read the first chapter posted on her blog. After that, I NEEDED to read more.

To speed up the story: I read the book in a few days, almost never putting it down, and I was hooked. I was hooked from that first chapter and each chapter after. The characters, the storyline, and the world that Boyce built…it was all so well written and like nothing I’ve ever read before. I needed books two! (I needed book three as well…and four once Boyce announced that the story grew just a bit too much for a trilogy to contain.)

To this day, Lichgates (and the other two released Grimoire Saga books) is always one of the first recommendations I made to someone looking for something new to read. I don’t have many fans who read fantasy (like myself), but I tend to push it on them as well and they eat it up! Lichgates and the Grimoire Saga have done what no other books have been able to do: Turn me into a “fangirl.” Yes, I said it, haha. These books are just that great and memorable, that they’ll stick with me for a long time and will be reread many times.

Once you find your lichgate into the world of Ourea, it’s hard to ever leave…and why would you want to?

Lichgates

Kara Magari is about to discover a beautiful world full of terrifying things—Ourea.

Kara, a college student still reeling from her mother’s recent death, has no idea the hidden world of Ourea even exists until a freak storm traps her in a sunken library. With no way out, she opens an ancient book of magic called the Grimoire and unwittingly becomes its master, which means Kara now wields the cursed book’s untamed power. Discovered by Ourea’s royalty, she becomes an unwilling pawn in a generations-old conflict—a war intensified by her arrival. In this world of chilling creatures and betrayal, Kara shouldn’t trust anyone… but she’s being hunted and can’t survive on her own. She drops her guard when Braeden, a native soldier with a dark secret, vows to keep her safe. And though she doesn’t know it, her growing attraction to him may just be her undoing.

For twelve years, Braeden Drakonin has lived a lie. The Grimoire is his one chance at redemption, and it lands in his lap when Kara Magari comes into his life. Though he begins to care for this human girl, there is something he wants more. He wants the Grimoire.

Welcome to Ourea, where only the cunning survive.

I read The Sin Collector last year, as well as Fortunato’s companion novella Thomas. After reading each of these I was left craving more and needing the next book. Now that I’ve finished book 2, Sacrifice, I can confidently say “Bring on book 3!”

Throughout the time I read it, this book was hard to put down. Fortunato’s writing has always grabbed me in, and she didn’t fail me this time either. It was easy for me to jump back into the story even after so much time between book one and now. That’s how much the story stuck with me. There’s also a sophistication to her writing that I find some modern writers don’t have. It’s not an insult, only something that sets these books apart for me. The word choice of the characters is a nice mix of modern with more aged terms. This helps show the effects of a Collector’s long  life-span, as well.

As I said earlier, this story jumps right into things from where book one left off.  The great characters I grew to love are back as well, yet this time, we get even more out of them. There’s room for more development and more history to come out of the woodwork. This book was a little different in the sense that there was a bit less action, but more information and development of the trilogy as a whole. I can see that there was a lot of thought put into where this story is going, and I’m pleased with the direction it’s taking.

There’s so much I’d like to say about various characters, some events, etc but it’ll be hard not to spoil it for readers, so I’ll refrain. For fans of The Sin Collector, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. For those new to the series, I hope you check out book 1 first, obviously, but you’re in for a great story with some great paranormal (and “normal”) characters. Also Lily, the main character, is still a badass!

#FREE – The Sin Collector, by Jessica Fortunato

We all know, here in the US, that Sunday is Mother’s Day and we should be bowing down to our mothers’ feet and showering them with presents….well, what better way to do that than to give her a book? And you can even treat yourself to a great book as well!

Jessica Fortunato is the author of various books, including The Sin Collector. And as a present to mothers who love to read, and their children and all other readers everywhere, she’s putting her first novel, The Sin Collector, in your hands for FREE!!!!

The Sin Collector

The Sin Collector follows the life of Liliana, a born Sin Collector. She has spent over 100 years absorbing people’s sins so they may rest in peace come death. However when she meets another Collector, one who insists everything she has been taught is a lie, Liliana must make her way from Sunny L.A. all the way to the streets of Madrid. Searching for answers to a question we all share. Why are we here? The friends and enemies she makes along the way only seem to blur the line between right and wrong. Can Liliana fight the Castus, an organization bent on killing off every Sin-Eater? Should she trust her head or her heart when the two most important men in her life are fighting alongside her?

Then there is the worst question of all, who will be left when the dust settles.

♠ Now would you like a copy of this book? I thought so! You can find it over on AMAZON for free today May 11th and tomorrow the 12th! ♠

And if you’d like to check out Fortunato’s other work, she has a short companion novella to this novel and an unrelated but great short story.
