New Release (and special excerpt): The Girl Next Door, by @Chel_C_Cam

New York Times bestselling author Chelsea M. Cameron is back with the opposites-attract, sweet-and-sexy small-town romance you’ve been waiting for.

Iris Turner hightailed it out of Salty Cove, Maine, without so much as a backward glance. Which is why finding herself back in her hometown—in her childhood bedroom, no less—has the normally upbeat Iris feeling a bit down and out. Her spirits get a much-needed lift, though, at the sight of the sexy girl next door.

No one knows why Jude Wicks is back in Salty Cove, and that’s just how she likes it. Jude never imagined she’d be once again living in her parents’ house, never mind hauling lobster like a local. But the solitude is just what she needs—until Iris tempts her to open up.

A no-strings summer fling seems like the perfect distraction for both women. Jude rides a motorcycle, kisses hard and gives Iris the perfect distraction from her tangled mess of a life. But come September, Iris is still determined to get out of this zero-stoplight town.

That is, unless Jude can give her a reason to stay…

One-click with confidence. This title is part of the Carina Press Romance Promise: all the romance you’re looking for with an HEA/HFN. It’s a promise!

My parents and I hadn’t really talked about what happened and why I was back, mostly because it wasn’t for just one reason. There were many reasons, all culminating with me packing my shit in my car, loading up my dog, abandoning my friends, and driving back here.

I asked Mom if there was any ice cream in the freezer and she said that there was. While I was getting a spoon, I glanced out the window, which happened to look right into our neighbor’s living room.

Jude.

The lights were on and she stood in the living room wearing nothing but a sports bra and some athletic shorts. The spoon I’d just grabbed clattered on the floor. As I stood up from retrieving the spoon, I found her staring directly at me. Instead of looking away like a normal person, I stared back.

Her hair had been long in high school and her arms hadn’t been so…sculpted back then. At least not that I remembered. My mouth went dry and I held on to the spoon for dear life.

“What are you looking at?” a voice said behind me and I shrieked and dropped the spoon again. I turned around and found my mom leaning over my shoulder to see what I’d been staring at.

“Oh, nothing, just staring off into space.” I rushed with my spoon and the ice cream back into the living room. My parents kept the room dark and the only light was from my dad’s lamp and the TV, so I could hide in a corner with my lobster-red face.

What had come over me? I’d just stood there leering like a fucking creeper. Part of me expected a knock at the door and for her to storm in and ask what I’d been staring at.

That didn’t happen, but it didn’t stop me from looking up from my book every few minutes to check and make sure.

Before bed, I took Dolly out to do her business and my eyes kept flicking over to the house. The lights were still on, but I wasn’t going to stare this time. I hadn’t asked for more information from my mom about Jude, but I did wonder what she was doing back here. She’d hated this town, from what I remembered, so it couldn’t just be because of her parents’ house.

High school in a small town in Maine was brutal for anyone who didn’t conform, and Jude had been adamant about not conforming. I’d done my best to get through, and the drama club had been my safe haven. I’d never thought seriously about acting after high school, since that was way out of my league, but I still thought about it every now and then. There was a community theater group a few towns away. Could I put myself out there and get into it again?

Dolly was taking her sweet time, sniffing the bushes at the edge of the porch to find the right one to pee near. I jumped as I heard a door slam, the door to the neighbor’s house.

I froze with my back to the house, pretending I wasn’t completely aware of what was happening. Was she leaving again on that motorcycle? Where would she go tonight? The only bar in town closed in less than an hour, and there was nothing else open. Unless she might be going to a friend’s house for a party?

Or perhaps she was going to the beach for a midnight swim. I shivered at the thought of Jude slipping beneath the waves like a mermaid.

USA TODAY bestselling author Sheila Roberts takes readers to the charming, snowbound town of Pine River in this irresistible holiday romance.

Sometimes you need to look beyond the big picture to see what really matters

Olivia Berg’s charity, Christmas from the Heart, has helped generations of families in need in Pine River, Washington, but this year might be the end of the road. Hightower Enterprises, one of their biggest donors since way back when Olivia’s grandmother ran the charity, has been taken over by Ebenezer Scrooge the Second, aka CFO Guy Hightower, and he’s declared there will be no more money coming to Christmas from the Heart.

Guy is simply being practical. Hightower Enterprises needs to tighten its belt, and when you don’t have money to spare, you don’t have money to share. You’d think even the pushy Olivia Berg could understand that.

With charitable donations dwindling, Olivia’s Christmas budget depends on Hightower’s contribution. She’s focused her whole life on helping this small town, even putting her love life on hold to support her mission.

When Guy’s Maserati breaks down at the edge of the Cascade foothills, he’s relieved to be rescued by a pretty young woman who drives him to the nearby town of Pine River. Until he realizes his rescuer is none other than Olivia Berg. What’s a Scrooge to do? Plug his nose and eat fruitcake and hope she doesn’t learn his true identity before he can get out of town. What could go wrong?

The Writer’s Ego

by Louise Caiola

In a perfect world, the writer would have no ego. We would be filled with an endless supply of interesting plot lines and legendary characters yet our hearts and minds would operate independently. Without the need for our work to be liked, understood, revered or extolled virtuously.

Newsflash – this is NOT a perfect world.

And so it goes that we writers set about our creative tasks with the greatest of care, like those tightrope walkers, without a net. We await word from the combined masses that we pretend will not personally resonate. We understand subjectivity. It’s the nature of all art.

A sour review will sometimes set us off track. Temporarily. We brush it aside. The joy of The Opinion. Yet our egos are not so readily placated. Truth be told (and you didn’t hear it from me) writers are really just humans with the very same delicate ego-ecosystem that most humans possess.

We cocoon ourselves in the illusion of safety that comes from the unavoidable scrutiny of the public eyes. More or less the IT IS WHAT IT IS demeanor of the literary world. The equivalent of an industry shrug. As though the nature of the business makes the tough stuff easier somehow.

Newsflash – It doesn’t.

This isn’t a PSA to all readers. Not a commercial suggesting that you Hug your Favorite Author Today.

This is merely a reminder. Writers are people too. When you stomp on us, we scuff. We fold. Stomp easier, if you will. Or mindfully. Or not at all.

Read with kindness. Appreciate the efforts behind the results. Play nice. An ego somewhere will thank you for it.

The Making of Nebraska BrownThe last thing eighteen-year-old Ann Leigh remembers is running from her boyfriend in a thick Nebraska cornfield. This morning she’s staring down a cool Italian sunrise, an entire continent from the life she once knew. The events of the eighteen months in between have inexplicably gone missing from her memory.

All at once she’s living with Tommy, an attractive, young foreigner asking for her continued love. Though he’s vaguely familiar, she recalls a boy named Shane in America who she reluctantly agreed to marry. Juggling a new world while her old one is still M.I.A is difficult enough without the terrifying movie scenes spinning a dizzy loop in her mind: glimpses of a devastating house fire, a romance gone wrong, an unplanned pregnancy, and a fractured family – each claiming to be part of who she once was – a girl and a past somehow discarded.

Ann Leigh must collect the pieces of herself to become whole again, but she doesn’t know who to trust especially when Tommy’s lies become too obvious to ignore. And above all, her heart aches to discover what became of the child she may or may not have given birth to.

The Making of Nebraska Brown tells the story of one girl’s coming apart from the inside and the great lengths she’ll go to reclaim herself and find her way home.

Title: Shame on You (Fool Me Once #1)Shame on You
Author: Tara Sivec

Rating: 5/5 stars

“War veteran Kennedy O’Brien is in the business of sticking it to the man—or at least any man who tries to cross a woman. After she returned home from Afghanistan and caught her husband in bed with the nanny, Kennedy lost her faith in men and started Fool Me Once Investigations with her two best friends. After all, there’s no better bounty hunter than a woman scorned.

When Kennedy takes a case to slap cuffs on a bail jumper turned dog-napper, she figures it’ll be an easy paycheck. But trouble has a way of finding Kennedy. Enter the last man on the planet she’d willingly choose as a partner: her cheating ex-husband’s best friend, Griffin Crawford.

As gorgeous as he is unwelcome, Griffin has always had a thing for Kennedy, and after keeping quiet about her ex’s cheating, he’ll do anything to earn back her trust. Whether or not she wants to admit it, Kennedy will need help as the case of the Chihuahua thief spirals out of control. Griffin may be just her man—in more ways than one.” (description from Goodreads)

Shame on You…where should I start with Shame on You? Well, for one, there are many puns I could write into this review from the title and I’ll do my best to not put them in here. They wouldn’t live up to the humor that Sivec wrote into this book, anyway. A good way for me to describe this book is to think of the Chocolate Lovers series, add some guns and add a little more seriousness to the mix. It wasn’t as outrageous as Sivec CL series, but it also didn’t need to be, either.

I was pleased with seeing another type of book from this author. Aside from the series I mentioned above, I’ve also read Watch Over Me, which was a very emotional and serious novel. From that, I knew Sivec had the ability to write in many different genres and could write very different stories. Shame on You branches off into yet another direction. Kennedy O’Brien is a sexy, snarky, and stubborn ex-Army turned bounty hunter who won’t take crap from anyone. Then there’s Griffin, one of her best friends, though recently he’s on her shit list, and their lives are thrown together again.

That’s only part of the conflict in this book. There’s also a bail jumper to catch. From the little we get to encounter McFadden, he’s a great character for was ways he can slip through Kennedy’s fingers. He’s just one of the cast of characters this book has to offer.

I was a little curious about Sivec being able to get a great story in the 140ish pages, but it turned out to not be an issue. This book might be short, but it’s a fast-paced ride that packs a punch all over. It was hard to put down. I was a little disappointed that it ended, but not by how it ended. Sivec grabbed me early on and I know I’ll be a fan of this three-book series just from reading Shame on You. I’m looking forward to seeing what Shame on Me has in store, in May.
