Story Time Friday…Current Events

Story Time Friday Bannerfancy lineresizeI don’t, much, get into current events with my work. I don’t get political or up in arms, often. But sometimes things need to be brought up, even in a minimalist way. That’s what this week’s poem is. Just a glimpse at a larger issue. Just a few lines touching on a much larger problem that could be (and has been) discussed for many years…and still not much change.

This week hasn’t been too different than other weeks in recent years, and that’s one of the things to take away from it. People died this week. More people than we heard about. But, as I said, it’s not that different than last week, or the week before that. Should this be the new norm?

On the News Tonight

 by Robert Zimmermann

If the bullets aren’t flying here,
what should I care?

If the television keeps my screen
plastered with victims’ faces,
I can just turn it off.

I don’t know these people,
but they should have just fired back.

Does this sound familiar?
Does anyone see a flaw?
Doesn’t everyone see the flaws?

Daily we hear of people dead,
and daily we just flip the channels
or mark unnecessary remarks.
We have a right to bear arms,
but we also have an obligation
to spare lives and misery.
There are ways to preserve both.

Yet, we still turn a blind eye
until it hits close to home,
or when one story overshadows
the others from the same day
to make that one more tragic,
more human.
That’s when we’ll pay attention
…though only for a brief time.

This special coverage better end soon.
My show starts at eight.

  1. I really liked this and like you I try and stay neutral online and don’t say much but these people are really starting to get to me that think they can just do whatever to whomever to make things right or even or whatever. I just wanted to say that this poem is timely and I enjoyed it a lot. Thanks for voicing things in just a simple form.
