“With the holiday season upon her, Jamie Foster is once again stressed about making her yearly visit back home to Woodfalls, still single. Fate intervenes in the form of Grant Johnson, a boy she grew up with, who catches the same flight while returning home from a business trip.
When a malfunction sends their plane crashing down on the runway upon takeoff, Jamie and Grant decide to rent a car and make the nine-hundred-mile drive home together. Ironically for them, anything that can go wrong does as they face one hysterical hurdle after another.
Christmas may finally bring Jamie the gift of love she has always wanted if she and Grant can manage to overcome a few obstacles along the way. Ho-ho-ho!” (description from Goodreads)
*Note – This is a review of an ARC of this novella.
It’s been a little while since I’ve read a book by Tiffany King, but as I usually end up saying, this one didn’t disappoint. What we get here is a cute novella with some great characters and a little romance. It was a great short read, and perfect for those looking for a light holiday themed read.
One of the great things about this novella was that while it’s part of the Woodfalls Girls series, No Attachments (the first release in the series) doesn’t have to be read before diving into this one. But if Cross Country Christmas is any indication of what the series is like, I’ll be opening up No Attachments soon enough.
Like the other books from King that I’ve read, this one pulled me in with an engaging main character. Jamie is the typical small town girl looking to find herself out in the world. It’s hard not to like her. Grant, the male lead, is also a great addition to the novella. He helps add some humor to Jamie’s worry and driven attitude.
I found the obstacles put in the characters’ way a little outrageous, but in a “good way” because even the characters joked about their bad luck. Though, I think with a plane crash there might have been a little more emotional trauma involved that would be more of a factor in their later plans. And after a second obstacle gets in their way, they seem to take it a little more light-heartedly than most might in the situation. Despite the slight unrealistic reactions (everyone’s different, and it’s not totally unbelievable, don’t be discouraged with it) in this book, I did enjoy how things unfolded.
Cross Country Christmas is a great novella to check out. I’d recommend it side-by-side with Tiffany King’s other work.
This novella will be released on November 1, 2013. Until then, you can check out the first book in the Woodfalls Girls series, the USA Today Bestselling book No Attachments
