Kayla Bradley is a witch and she has a problem. She is so attracted to her boss, Ryan Cooper, that she can not control her magic when she is around him. Kayla tries to stay away from him, but her best friend Samantha thinks the only way she can cure her problem is to sleep with Cooper.

Ryan Cooper is a lawyer that helps magical people who have been discriminated against. After many disastrous encounters with Kayla, Cooper contacts his sister who tells him that witches sometimes misfire when sexually attracted to someone. Cooper takes matters into his own hands and seduces Kayla in his office after work one day. Will Kayla fall for his seduction?

Excerpt:

“Kayla, you have to come out.”

“No! I may never come out again.”

“We have to be back in the meeting in five, come on. It wasn’t that bad. I’m sure they didn’t even notice,” Samantha said then quickly covered her mouth to muffle the giggle she let slip out.

“Sam, are you laughing at my humiliation? You’re supposed to be my best friend. I’m sure they all noticed, I mean, I set his tie on fire!”

“Well, it’s funny. Come out I’m tired of talking to the bathroom stall door. Stop acting like a kid.”

Kayla slowly opened the stall door and walked out; her cheeks were still blazing red with embarrassment.

“Kayla, why are you still having misfires? We’ve had our full powers for five years now. You should’ve out grown those years ago.”

“I know; it just seems that every time I’m around Cooper, I get all nervous and things just happen.”

“Ohmigawd! You like him! You’re getting all hot and worked up for him and that’s what’s causing the misfires.”

“Maybe, I mean yeah I’m very attracted to him, way more than I’ve ever been attracted to anyone ever!”

“How long has it been, ya know, since you were with a man? Maybe that is what’s wrong; you have all this pent up energy and it needs to be released…by Cooper.”

“Umm not too long, well maybe a little while.”

“How long Kayla?”

“Two and a half years.”

“Wow! I would die”

“Samantha, stop being so overdramatic. You know that when Brad cheated on me it hurt me badly and I just haven’t been able to get close to another guy ever since.”

“Well if that’s what’s causing you to misfire, you need to get laid before you do some serious harm to the poor guy,” Sam said with a giggle. “You don’t have to jump into a relationship, just the sack. Now come on, we have to get back in the meeting.”

* * * *

The two women walked into the large conference room and sat at the end of the large table. On one side were two older witches and their lawyer. On the other side was Ryan Cooper, head litigator for the “Mortals For Magic” non profit. He specialized in witches and warlocks who had been treated unfairly only because of their magical abilities. Since the magical world let itself be known to the mortal world, there had been a backlash and a new type of discrimination had formed.

Cooper was the mortal son of a magical mother, so he was perfect to run the company even though his mother had long ago shunned her abilities in favor of a rich husband and privileged lifestyle. He was tall, with a dark complexion and short well kept dark blond hair and looked every bit the part of a lawyer. He knew the laws and understood that the magical people were like regular people, just with a little magic.

Cooper sat across from the two older witches, with the top two buttons on his shirt undone and his tie long gone; his collar showing only slight singe marks. He grinned his million dollar smile at the two older witches.

“Ladies, I am honored to give you this check that was sent to us today as severance from your job. The company would like to apologize for the misunderstanding. They are thankful for your years of service and wish you both the best in future endeavors.”

The older of the two ladies took the check, looked it over and said, “Well I’m still pissed they fired us just because we came out about our powers. We worked there twenty-five years. But to tell you the truth, I was getting tired of those idiots. And I’m sure this check will be enough for us to live on for the rest of out lives. Come on Louise, let’s hit the mall.”

The two older ladies stood up and almost sprinted out of the room. Cooper shook hands with their lawyer and walked him to the door then turned to face Sam and Kayla.

“Well that went well, all things considered.”

“Cooper I am so sorry, I guess I must be getting sick. I can pay for your tie and dry cleaning on your jacket.”

“No need to worry Kayla, my sister did worse when she was getting her powers. But she was much younger. I guess you should take the rest of the day off and go see if you can figure out what is causing the misfires. Sam if you could give us a moment alone I need to talk to Kayla.”

“Sure,” Sam said as she turned and walked out of the room, looking back over her shoulder giving Kayla a quick wink when she thought Cooper couldn’t see her.

Cooper walked over and placed a hand on Kayla’s shoulder, looking down at her with his crystal clear green eyes, “Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Yeah Cooper, I’m okay.”

“We can’t have our best magical investigator sick; go take care of your self.”

As soon as he walked out the door a silver stream shot from her finger and caused a small clap of thunder and a rain cloud appeared over the table.

Sam rounded the corner and stood at the door, looking up at the rain cloud.

“Oh lord Kayla, go get laid,” she said as she quickly zapped the raincloud away.

“Love and Cherokee magic combine in a 1980s Heavy Metal world to manifest an unexpected surprise for two star crossed lovers. Mature content warning.” (description from Goodreads)

__________

It didn’t hate this short story, but I didn’t really come close to enjoying it fully. It’s short and I was waiting for something to happen in it.

I was a little disappointed, mainly, due to the lack of a clear conflict. There was obvious potential for conflict to those reading it. I can count at least two conflicts that could have been brought forth and could have added to the story. There’s potential here, I’ll say that.

Basically, the story was going somewhere, there was forward movement which all stories need, but it was too easy to get to the end point that was very obvious to predict. Suzie is Cherokee, but it was just thrown into the story as if the reader should have known. “Cherokee magic” is mentioned in the short description, but when reading the story BAM she is part Cherokee, with a spell book and all. I’m pointing this out because I feel that the reader doesn’t get to know the character enough. This goes for other characters as we. There is a lot of telling rather than showing of details.

Let it be known that, according to the title page this is “First in a Series of Vignettes.” Yet, that’s the only mention of it, so I went into this a little blind because I skipped over that mention the first time. I’m intrigued enough from the absurd twist ending to possibly check out the second installment because I really don’t know how the twist fits into this story at all. I almost can’t not give it a chance.

Although I have some issues with this story, this was a free read (at the time of this review). I wouldn’t discourage anyone from trying it out themselves. Who knows, it might just be your cup of tea :)

Review: With You In Spirit by Miranda Stork

Title: With You in Spirit (The Bassinville Witches Series #1)
Author: Miranda Stork
Rating: 4/5 Stars

Catherine has enough problems in her life without adding more. She lives in a town full of Wiccan witches, where she holds absolutely no powers. Her best friends seem to take all the best men, and her work colleague has a major crush on her. Other than that, life is pretty sweet.

Until a dagger appears in her bedroom, bringing back frightening memories of a past both her mother and herself left behind long ago. The ghosts of the past refuse to stay buried however, and they threaten to swallow both of them whole, closing in on them…

And then the charming, roguish Mr Rouquette appears. He is gorgeous, kind, and clever…so why does it feel as though there is something not quite right about him? And can Catherine trust him at all when her world begins to crumble around her feet, and he seems to be at the centre of it all?…
(Description from Goodreads)

__________

I know of Stork’s work. She has her novel Conner out, but I haven’t gotten to read it yet. Same thing with a paranormal erotica collection Craving. I figured the best place to start with a small amount of reading time was with this one. Now I’m eagerly awaiting the second in the series.

I was intrigued by the setting of this story. It takes place in the southern United States….deep south. It’s a small town that’s closed off enough from the surrounding areas to allow its history of being a Wiccan community to thrive. This was very cool. It felt like something that could actually happen in the real world (if you leave out the debate of whether or not magic and all that is real). Basically, you really never know what goes on in small communities. Everyone knows everyone so it’s easy to keep a secret like this from the outside world. Because this is a novella, there wasn’t a wide cast of characters. I hope that in later installments Stork will give us more glances into what the town has to offer. Small towns always have interesting people in them.

What I was also drawn to was the language. It’s not really something to always mention, but I feel I need to. Miranda Stork is from the UK and she’s writing a story that takes place in the US. Not really a big deal, but I found entertaining to read words that aren’t used in America describe various things in the story. This also helped reflect that the main character Catherine is a native of England. The combination of a UK character living and author writing in the United States just jumped out at me. It had a very American feel to it, so it was strangely good.

Another thing to note is the character of Mr. Caden Rouquette. He’s pretty much a cowboy ____….wait I can’t tell you what that blank should say. You’ll just have to read about it. But I really thought it was cool to have a character like that. He was a mystery like most men in the books I’ve been reading. And while I’m not into them myself, I can see qualities that women will probably swoon over for awhile.

The driving plot of this story, the mystery of who’s out to harm Catherine and her mother, and what they want to do that for had me wondering the whole time. I was questioning my judgement of characters left and right. At the reveal I was left with more questions; left wanting more…the second novella in the series. If this was the peril already, what will happen next? I guess I’m going to have to grab Playing With Fire when it comes out.

I was born in Guisborough, North Yorkshire in 1987 and have lived in various places around Britain, including Newcastle and Glasgow.

My writing is inspired by various writers, including the vivid characters of Charles Dickens, the imagination of Stephen King, and the gothic imagery of Anne Rice.

My love of horror began at an early age, when I was only three or four. I could read proficiently at the age of three, and devoured fairy-stories, but I always had a bent towards the darker stories, such as the Brother’s Grimm’s tales…Red Riding Hood was always a firm favourite, although I always felt sorry for the wolf, despite him having tried to eat everyone!

For All You Entertainment Needs: Justin The Mystifyer

This post is going to be a little different than most of the things you’ll see on A Life Among The Pages. That’s because the following can’t exactly be found among any pages. OK, to be honest, it technically can. The following is a little bit about a great webshow I know about, so in that sense if can be found among the web pages.

__________

Justin The Mystifyer is a talented magician and illusionist. Yes, you read that right. He has been practicing the art of magic and doing illusions for a number of years and is making quite a name for himself.

Along with being a well-known magician, Justin is the host of Mystifyed Live. This is a weekly web show that brings viewers the best of  established and up-and-coming entertaininers in many disciplines. Guest regularly range from fellow magicians, escape artists, and a variety of musicians.

I first found out about Justin and his web show from my college roommate Corey Martin. Corey is now the co-host of Mystifyed Live. In recent months I have tuned in on a number of occasions to witness the hilarity and informative nature that the hosts and guests have to offer.

One of best shows I have witnessed actually happened last night. Most of the guests are connected to the main show through a skype call. As all who’ve used Skype know, a good connection and good equipment (mic/camera) are necessary. But even if you have these mishaps occur. Last night for instance, the guest’s video froze on a picture of his sock (don’t worry about what his sock was doing there). It was hilarious because the viewers could continue to listen to all the audio, but could only see a sock. This goes for the hosts as well. Even though they were cracking up, the show still went on, and the ability to roll with the unexpected is a great quality this show has.

Some of the musicians that have been guest on this show have blown me away. They I have seen a variety of genres represented from country to pop to rap. I’m amazing at the talent I’ve seen Justin bring on to this show week after week.

This show isn’t only about having fun and getting to know more about the entertainers. Justin the Mystifyer and the Mystifed Crew are active supporters of Autism Awareness. This is a common topic on the show and adds to each show. Recently a new segment has been created in which time is taken out of every show to share an autism story. Justin leaves this open for anyone who’d like to share, whether it’s a regular viewer, a guest, or someone just stumbling upon the show for the first time. If there’s a story about someone who has been directly touched by autism in any way, their story is given the chance to be told.

This is one of the things I like best about Mystifyed Live and everyone involved in it. The host doesn’t come first. The crew doesn’t come first. It’s the fans. The fans are what makes the show worth getting involved. Whether it’s just watching the interactions in the chatbox and on camera, or getting involved in the chatbox myself, there’s always fun to be had during a show or with the social media attached to it.

There’s only so much I have say about Mystifyed Live and those who make it all possible. The best way to fully appreciate that which is Justin The Mystifyer and his ego-approved webshow Mystifyed Live, is by giving it a chance. Do me a favor and consider tuning in one of these weeks. The show airs every Sunday night at 8PM EST/7PM CST

The show can be found along with a plethora of information about the show, crew, Justin himself, and past guests over on justinthemystifyer.com

I’d like to also share some of the autism links that can be found on Justin’s website.

Review: Lichgates (Grimoire Trilogy Book I) by S.M. Boyce

Title: The Grimoire – Lichgates
Author: S.M. Boyce
Rating: 5/5 Stars

__________

Kara was hiking on familiar trails in the Rocky Mountains on afternoon. When she came upon a trail she’d never seen before, she decided to see where it went. She never expected what happened next.

Soon after she was forced into an underground vault, locked in a room full of books. On the table was the book most sought after, The Grimoire. Upon opening the book she must struggle to survive in a dangerous world full of people and creatures that can’t be trusted and are out to kill.

That is how I’d summarize the first chapter. After reading that chapter, which is available online for a free preview, I needed to get a hold of this book. The problem was I had (and still do have) a good amount of books to get through as it is. I tried pushing the thought of this book in the back of my mind. It didn’t work well. It also didn’t help that I talk to the author on Twitter very regularly. Another thing that didn’t help is that soon after getting hooked from the sample chapter, S.M. Boyce had a game of Twitter Hangman in which I won an ebook copy of the book. How could I keep from reading it while it’s in my possession? Well I couldn’t stop myself, and I’m glad I didn’t wait any longer.

__________

The Grimoire: Lichgates is the first book in The Grimoire Trilogy. In this first book the author, S.M. Boyce, throws Kara (the main character) and the reader into an entirely new work called Ourea. To get to this world, Lichgates are necessary. They are portals linking our world to the dangerous, yet beautiful, kingdoms of Ourea. They are scattered all over both worlds and it is through one of them in the Rocky Mountains that Kara stumbles.

Upon falling into an underground library, Kara finds waiting for her an old red leather book. The book is very magical. On it is a necklace with a pendant that looks like four crescent moons configured in the shape of a four-leaf clover. This book is so magical that there are blank pages throughout, but when asked the right questions the pages flip to sections and words appear with an answer.

This book is one of Kara’s only defenses against what lies in wait for her in Ourea. Upon opening the book, she has become the center of every kingdom’s focus; she is the Vagabond. Her purpose in this strange world is to reunite the four kingdoms in peace, fulfilling the goal of the first Vagabond who died a thousand years before.

This concept really caught me from the beginning. Like I said I was hooked from reading the first chapter alone. It takes a lot to do that with most books. Part of what kept me reading was the fact that this book doesn’t wait to get the reader into the action. There is no lead in chapters, no foreshadowing, no mercy. Kara is hiking one minute and in Ourea fighting for her life the next. Every time throughout the book it seems that there will be some time to relax (for the characters and readers alike) something happens. It’s almost impossible to put this book down. Lucky for me I was able to force the book down, which allowed me to savor every experience it held; there are many.

I loved many elements of this book. First off, the setting made me want to visit Ourea. I know this is impossible (not only because it’s not a real place) because if I went there, I’d most likely die (more on that soon.) Ourea is like the worlds of most fantastical stories. It has its beautiful landscapes, luxurious castles, and even a dreary kingdom no one wants to acknowledge. Its landscapes include forests, a kingdom nestled on top of a vertigo inducing multi mile high cliff, and even a kingdom found in a magical dome on the bottom of an ocean guarded by sharks. And it’s not just the places themselves that I fell in love with, it’s the way Boyce’s words describe them. I can’t do it justice in my own words, you’ll have to take my word for it or read the book. Her words paint a picture of every aspect allowing the reader to soak in the images.

The setting wasn’t the only exciting part of the book. There are also the various creatures of the land. To mention a few there are griffins, dragons, something Kara says is similar to a squirrel, and one of my favorites a flaer named Rowthe. I liked him a lot because he’s a huge dog like creature. Of course he has a unique ability, but I’m going to let you find that one out, it’s just really cool.

The characters Kara encounters are very hard to figure out. This helps the story be what it is more than anything else. The Grimoire from the beginning warns Kara that she can’t trust anyone in Ourea. A lot of the times it seems like the characters can be figured out and trusted, but then there’s either a subtle or drastic hint to the contrary. As a reader I was always jumping to conclusions about a character only to change my opinion soon after. I’m still waiting for a character to make a turn for the worse, but we’ll see if that happens.

Kara’s journey takes the reader all over Ourea and she meets a variety of good and evil. She even has encounters with the evil King, Blood Carden. He is the father of Kara’s companion Braeden. I guess I should have mentioned him by now. Carden is the ruler of the Stele, the banished kingdom who reeks havoc on Ourea even through a banishment. Braeden, his son, escaped from his father’s kingdom twelve years earlier and has been hiding elsewhere ever since. But the ever present question in my mind was whether or not he was one to be trusted. When would the evil in his blood consume him, if at all? For most of the book I kept liking and trusting him, but wanted to keep an eye on him for Kara’s sake (not that I could have helped here, that’s just silly she’s in a book.) There is also a growing connection between Kara and the mysterious Braeden which leads to some complications in the relationship of him as protector and one of her few friends.

To wrap this up, The Grimoire: Lichgates is on my top five favorite books I have read this year and possibly in recent years. I keep reading great books so this list should be extended to at least ten. I loved the story, I loved the setting, I loved everything about this book. The only problem that I had with it is that I didn’t have the next book to read. I only hope that the day comes when I can read book two, then book three, sooner than it will.
