Review: The Card, by Brandon R. Luffman

Title: The CardThe Card
Author: Brandon R. Luffman
Rating: 4/5 Stars

“When a strange tarot card appears in a friend’s deck, Jason assumes it’s just a prank done in poor taste. But, when terrible events befall those around him, he must face the possibility that something sinister is afoot.

Death is closing in, along with a suspicious detective who believes that Jason may be the killer he’s stalking. With his life turned upside down, Jason finds that there are worse things to be hunted by than the authorities.

This 4,500 word short is a supernatural horror story in the spirit of the pulp era, but with a modern feel.” (Description from Goodreads)

__________

Here’s another great short from Brandon R. Luffman. I first read some of his work early last year, and couldn’t wait for more.

The Card delivered with a well-written story, like I had expected. There’s a great, slow reveal as the story moves along as to what exactly is going on. We get to see, along with Jason the main character, the fate that a mysterious tarot card brings with it. Even though there was some obvious foreshadowing that allowed me to take a guess as part of the outcome, it was still enjoyable to read up to and passed to see how it played out.

Luffman has a gift for creating a great, dark story. A story that’s short, sweet, and will stick with you. I’m looking forward to see what he does with his novel, Frostwalker, when it comes out. The short fiction is promising enough.

HOT NEW RELEASE: Infernal Machines, by Will Millar

I’d like to take some time today to shove a new book down your throats! Yea, I’m good like that; bringing new books and great new authors to your attention. Well this time I’m going to PUSH it on you…ok not really. But I’d really like to bring this one to your attention.

To join this group of great authors and great books, is none other than Will Millar with his book Infernal Machines. I have this one loaded up on my Kindle right now begging me to read it. I’ve been looking forward to this vintage horror style novel for a few months now. Here’s a little bit about the book.

infernalmachines

Paulie and Stoner aren’t bad seeds; they’re just a little too smart for their own good. They stole their first car in kindergarten, and as for the homemade rocket launcher in Stoner’s garage … well, it’s best just not to ask.

With 9th grade just around the corner, Paulie and Stoner find themselves on the wrong side of some real bad kids, an older band of white supremacists that go by the name of “Twisted Cross.” When a rumble at a high school keg party turns fatal, it sets off a chain of events that test the limits of Paulie and Stoner’s friendship, and their very sanity.

Welcome to Chapel Harbor, a town where everybody buries their secrets deep, and nobody is quite who they seem. A town where the ghost of a serial killer known as The Junkman is rumored to stalk the woods at night, and where an unassuming magic shop and its mysterious proprietor, Arthur Cardiff, may possess the key to an ancient and terrible evil.

Packed with hairpin turns and twists that will keep you guessing until the very last page, Infernal Machines is a blood drenched, adrenaline fueled, roller-coaster of a horror story that’s at once a paean to the Pulp Horror classics of the early 80’s and a meditation on the enduring power of friendship.

You can find this book out now for the Amazon Kindle in the following countries. It will soon be on Kobo and the iBookstore!!

This book is on sale for $0.99 until January 4th!! Grab it fast!!! You can also find it in paperback for only 12.95!!

Review: Dark Spaces By Dionne Lister

Title: Dark Spaces
Author: Dionne Lister
Rating: 4/5 Stars

“A book of suspenseful short stories and flash fiction that takes you deep into the dark spaces of fear and sadness. Approximately 10,000 words that will have you gripping your e-reader. Come along for the ride.” (description from Goodreads)

__________

I couldn’t wait to start this book once I bought it. I was in need of something fast, yet worth reading, and I wasn’t disappointed.

Dark Spaces is a collection full of very descriptive writing. Many times I was left admiring Lister’s ability to paint a beautiful picture comprised of such dark and disturbing aspects of the human experience. It was this that drew me in to many of these stories.

There were a few tales that didn’t full work for me, yet they were worth reading nonetheless. There isn’t a bad egg in here. Some of my favorites were the opening story “Breathe in Autumn” (great start in my opinion,) “The Presentation,” “Amy,” and “Heart of an Angel” (a glimpse into the workings of the twisted mind of a nurse, and a great ending).

Lister has put together a great group of these short shorts and I’d gladly pick up any collection she comes out with in the future.

Review: The Devil’s Metal by Karina Halle

Title: The Devil’s Metal
Author: Karina Halle
Rating: 5/5 Stars

“It’s the summer of 1974 and 21-year old Dawn Emerson has only three things she wants to do: compete one last time in the Ellensburg Rodeo, win back her ex-boyfriend Ryan, and become the best damn music journalist at Central Washington University. But all her plans are left in the dust when she’s contacted by Creem magazine to go on the road with one of her favorite groups, the up-and-coming metal band, Hybrid.

At first the assignment reads like a dream come true. Not only will Dawn land some much-needed credibility as a female music journalist, but she’ll finally get to experience life from the other side of the stage, and maybe crack the drunken, enigmatic code that is guitarist Sage Knightly. Instead, Dawn finds herself on an aging tour bus filled with ego-maniacs, band politics and a whole lot of sex, drugs and rock n’ roll. When monsters start showing up in dressing rooms and some of Sage’s groupies become increasingly strange and dangerous, Dawn discovers the band is not only going places – they’re going straight to Hell.

And Dawn has a backstage pass.

***

The Devil’s Metal is the first book in a two-part New Adult Horror/Paranormal Romance and very (very!) loosely based on the author’s exploits as a music journalist. Hell comes in different forms.” (description from Good Reads)

__________

Karina Halle is known for her ever-growing series, Experiment in Terror. While Halle is still writing more books for EIT, she has also had time to write this very different novel. She has shown me as a reader that Perry and Dex aren’t the only characters I wish to follow along with.

I seem to always be drawn to a well written book that involves music in such a prominent way that The Devil’s Metal does. I feel that the way Halle has written the experience of touring with a metal band, written the shows, and the views of outsiders looking in on a 70′s band is very consistent with books I’ve read on similar topics. At first I wasn’t sure how a book set back a few decades would work, when the author herself wasn’t around to experience it first hand. She proved me wrong with that and I feel this novel had to take place in that decade. It fit perfectly.

Another aspect of the writing I greatly enjoyed was the characters. Sometimes in books there are a few well written, deep characters. You get to know them well and secondary characters seem to fall short in some way or another. That’s not the case here. There weren’t any characters in this book that seemed flat in the least. Even characters the reader might only see for a scene or two feel like they are very real. The reader’s able to get to know and enjoy everyone. Nothing seemed glossed over and this also helped in sympathizing for the characters, no matter how small their role was.

So, you get that this is about a rock band and a journalist. You can get that from reading the description. But what sets this book apart from some other book about touring with a band? I’ll make it simple. Think about the movie Almost Famous. It’s similar in the sense that a young aspiring journalist is touring with a band in the same era. Now act as if it were written by someone like Stephen King. Yea, fucked up right? The horror element of this story set it apart from anything else similar I’ve read. What I liked about it was that it seemed less on the paranormal side (as far as I’m used to in paranormal books) and more straight up horror. There’s a very real world feel to the novel. I never really expected anything abnormal to pop up. Then it did. But did it really? Were the characters just delusional or on drugs? Then it happens again, but I still was questioning it. I enjoy that. Sometimes I need a break from just accepting the fact that something paranormal or supernatural is common place for characters. Karina Halle KNOWS how to write horror into the real world expertly.

This is the first book in a two-part “series.” In ways I’d be happy having this as a stand alone, one book only story line. But I fell in love with the characters and will need to pick up the next book as soon as it comes out. I have a feeling the next book will knock me on my ass with more intensity. Things can only get even better from here!
