I have a treat for you all today. A few treats actually. First, as you can see in the title of this post, there is a review for a great short story Alien Invasion of the Zombie Apocalypse. This is an amusing short that changes up the zombie story by adding in more “terror”….ALIENS!!!!!
The next treat I have is a little information on how I found out about the author/his story. I was recently advised to join a new Facebook group called “free kindle and nook ebooks for ereaders” by a great friend I have on Twitter, @HilyBee (follow her, shes great and just as into finding people book deals as I am). Basically this group is a great, and growing, place for book fanatics to post links to ebooks that are free! I’ve found some great titles so far from following this group. One of these the one I read for this review (obviously).
Ford Forkum recently had a free day in which I got his book from Amazon. I’m glad I did. I think it’s even worth the $0.99 regular price…if not a bit more Continue to the review if you want to see why I enjoyed it.
Title: Alien Invasion of the Zombie Apocalypse
Author: Fork Forkum
Rating: 5/5 Stars
“In a satirical combination of two end-of-the-world scenarios, a zombie plague is quickly followed by an alien invasion – in a time when humanity is already struggling with vampires.
Landing dead center at a college campus swarming with zombies, the aliens soon realize that their abduction mission is going to be quite a bit more complicated than they’d imagined. The presence of vampires only makes the situation worse.
Will the human race prevail or be forced to relocate to an alien planet? Is there any way to reverse the zombie plague? Is the plague contagious to aliens and can an alien be turned into a vampire? What if a vampire alien became a zombie, then was bitten by a radioactive spider and then possessed by the ghost of a robot werewolf? That last part doesn’t happen in the story, but what if it did?
Find out what becomes of humanity in this hodgepodge of dystopian absurdity.” (description from Amazon)
What was so great about this story? Many things. First: the title. I know that it basically tells you what you’re in for. It leaves no mystery…but it works. I read the title and knew I wanted to see what it was about. How on Earth (or in the Universe, haha) would an author write a story involving Zombies AND Aliens without making a worthless piece of crap story? Well, I think it all comes down to whether the author has a good story behind the “clever” idea of throwing random disasters together.
Forkum put a brilliant twist this story. I was expecting one thing, and got something much better. Aliens coming to Earth with plans on destroying things, only to find out Zombies have already done the job for them. And what else happens that I enjoyed? No, no, I can’t reveal that here. You need to read it for yourself.
What I can discuss is the writing. There is nothing spectacular about the writing. It’s not going to be the “next great literary story of our time.” First of all, I don’t think there are many of today’s writers who’d be up for that honor. I don’t really care about that anyway. What I do care about is that the writing is clearly intelligent enough to for a humorous yet moist read. Authors can throw together a piece and I’ll just put it down because it’s too dry, tries to be too clever by being too wordy, and other ways that harm a story (in my reading eye).
In short, since I may have started a tangent with that last bit, I greatly enjoyed this story. I was refreshing. It was a bit off the normal look on zombies and doomsday. The solution to the conflict was amusing. And there was also a good use, but not overuse, of commentary on the state of human beings. All in all, if you like a bit of humor, some zombies, aliens, and vampires, you might like this story. It takes no time at all to read and will leave you with a smile.
