MY NEW RELEASE: Winter’s Homecoming and Other Poems

Through some delay and a good amount of hard work, I was able to finally release my newest book to the world. I’ve been wanting to give readers a small sampling of my poetry just for being as supportive as they are. And for future readers, who haven’t read my work, to get a glimpse into what they might expect for reading From Where I Stand or other future releases.

Winter’s Homecoming and Other Poems might not be as hard-hitting as From Where I Stand. It also might lack the personal narrative that those poems presented so strongly. But I think you won’t be disappointed in this somewhat new direction the poems take the reader. These are poems written many years ago, but with a great overhaul. Some are only slightly updated, while others took the haiku form and expanded itself to something larger.

The way I’d really like to say thank you to everyone is by letting you know that for the month of January, this chapbook will be FREE on Smashwords (and Kobo if I finally get it to publish there…still working on that. Possibly B&N as well). After this month, I’ll bring the price up to $0.99 to match what I have it for over on Amazon. So grab it while you still can!!!

__________

Before I share more about the book, I’d like to make mention of one thing: reviews. So far I’ve gotten a great bunch of reviews for From Where I Stand on Amazon, Goodreads, and Smashwords. I’d just like to thank everyone who’s left one for my début collection.

With that said, if anyone reading Winter’s Homecoming has the time, reviews on this collection are also greatly appreciated. If you post it just on your blog, or just one other channel, that’s still great! If you can get it everywhere else, that’s even better and more than expected. Just remember that reviews help some readers choose great books that they’ll enjoy. This goes for every book, not just mine.

So again, thank you to all the reviews to date, as well as all future reviews from anyone listening :D

I HIT TEN THOUSAND VIEWS!!! GIVEAWAY!!!!!!

Thanks to being “Freshly Pressed” by WordPress, my blog basically BLEW UP all day yesterday. By this I mean my old record for daily page views (274, the first day of Indie Week) was surpassed before I even woke up fully. In fact before noon the total was around 1000. By the end of the day I happily had a total of 1824 page views for the day. 1,117 of these were for the post that was Freshly Pressed, my latest Aged Pages post. Along with the views came many people “liking” the post and many new followers. What I’m very happy with is the amount of comments I got. That is the best part of writing my posts. I like the interaction I have with my readers. It lets me know what they like, what they don’t, and lets me know they actually read the post ;) So in the end with this popularity boost (which I really do hope sticks around a little bit because this ONE day somewhat overshadows my entire Indie Week event…not in how much I enjoyed it but in blog response) my blog went from a total of somewhere in the 8,000s for blog views all the way to 10,000!!!! That’s a huge milestone and I’d like to give back finally. I would like to hold a giveaway for everyone. I don’t have much money to spend on books at the moment, but I do have a Gift Card on Amazon that I plan to stretch out over the next few months in order to get some great upcoming releases. I will be sacrificing some of that gift card to the winner of this fun giveaway.

__________

So the giveaway, that’s what you came here for. It’ll be for any TWO Kindle books from the list below. These are some of the books I’ve read and reviews here on the site. They are some of my favorites, as well. I think that’s the best gift I can give you. I loved them, maybe you will as well. I think there’s enough variety where the winner will be able to find two that they haven’t bought already…and if there aren’t two on the list I might be able to work with him/her to find something great and in the same price range.

Would you like to know the books now? Yes, I’ m sure you do :)

Prizes to Choose From

As an added bonus I’d like to make you all aware of a few books that I’ve reviewed/have still to review that are FREE (as of the time of this post). This way even if you don’t win, you all still get the chance to grab a book or two :D

OK, so that took a bit to set up….wait, you’re reading this after it’s posted. I guess you don’t need to know how long it took to put all those links in haha. Well click the titles of the books to see my reviews if you’d like. It could help you decide what books you’d like to win if any. Grab those freebies too. I’m sure there are more I can list, but well I’m getting lazy now.

NOW….how to enter. It’s simple. I don’t care if you follow me, or tweet this, or Facebook post it, or write it in the sky even (though I may pick anyone who does that as a winner no matter what ;) ).

  • All I ask is that you come here to the post and leave a comment.
    • Tell me what you like about the blog or what you don’t like. What you’d like to see more of or less. Do you want to be a guest doing a guest post or be a guest on either Aged Pages or Authors We Love? Please tell me in a comment, I’m always open for more guests!
  • Please to enter just leave a comment pertaining to something along those lines and you’re in the running.
  • The giveaway is open from the time this posts until Saturday August 25th at 11:59 PM.
    • Then after that I’ll wake up in the morning and choose a RANDOM winner from the comments.
  • Please remember the prizes will be gifted through AMAZON only. If you can’t read Kindle books, I’m sorry. Funds just don’t allow me to go through B&N or somewhere else at this time.
  • If you’re commenting and don’t want/can’t enter, please mention that. I still want to hear from you all :)
  • OH, and be sure to leave your email so I can contact the winner.
    • I think when you comment there is a place for it, so you might not need to leave it IN the comment itself….but I know some people comment by using their Twitter or other social media accounts. If that’s the case, please leave an email to contact you with in the comment itself, or it won’t count.
  • To restate once again. The winner will choose TWO of the KINDLE books listed above (not the free ones obviously) as his/her prize.
  • This giveaway is open for international winners as I’ve been told I can give Kindle books to people in other countries. I’ve never done that before, but we’ll see what happens :)

__________

WINNER RANDOMLY CHOSEN……..and that winner is……S.M. BOYCE!!!!!!! (I finally get to give HER a prize instead of winning so much from her.)

What were her choices? None other than The 13th Doorway by D.J. Shaw and Wishing For Someday Soon by Tiffany King. Both are great books and I hope Boyce enjoys them. I hope you all had fun with the giveaway and maybe you found a book you’d like to check out. Thank you all for being part of this :)

Aged Pages: Through the Eyes of a Convert, Guest Post By Jackie Vazquez

__________

Aged Pages: Through the Eyes of a Convert

For as long as I can remember, books have been a part of my life. I started young, with the classic children’s book “Goodnight Moon” being read to me every night. From there, my love of books grew. I learned to read at a very early age (at one point, my parents thought I was a genius) and went through books like they were going out of style. At around the age of six or seven, my aunt bestowed unto me her cherished collection of L.M. Montgomery’s “Anne of Green Gables” books. I quickly fell in love with Anne Shirley,Montgomery’s spunky protagonist, and delighted in following the goings-on in her life throughout the series.

Yet I always wondered where these books, filled as they were with their bright characters and beautiful worlds, came from. Everything in my tiny collection was a gift, but if I wanted to expand my library, I had to find the source. I can’t remember for the life of me the first time I entered a bookstore, but I was hooked from then on. I would beg my mother to take me to the mall, and while most girls my age were making a beeline for Claire’s or Hot Topic, I would run straight to Waldenbooks. I sat on the floor and read as my mother ran her errands, and would be fully engrossed in whatever book I had picked up by the time she came back. As I got older, I must sheepishly admit that my taste changed and I spent a majority of my time and money in the manga (Japanese graphic novel) section. Yet Waldenbooks was always my first stop at the mall, right up until the very day it closed. Once I grew a little bit older and had my own mode of transportation, I would hop in my car and drive to the Borders a few towns over. When they opened a Barnes & Noble at the mall, you could find me curled up in a chair in the corner of the store, happily reading whatever I could get my hands on. I would gladly spend my hard earned money at these big-name, corporate bookstores if it meant I could get back into the worlds an author wanted to share with me.

I went on in this manner for a number of years, well into my early adulthood, blissfully unaware that there were alternative routes to the book world. Whether this was a product of my environment or my upbringing, I’ve yet to determine. I’m sure used bookstores exist on Long Island, I’m just not sure of where to find them.

My outlook on the world of books (not to mention my outlook on life) was changed forever the moment my path intertwined with that of the handsome, debonair pirate/cowboy/poet/man known as Robert Zimmermann. All sappy girlfriend feelings aside, Rob is a genuinely passionate man, and his love for the literary world is limitless. You don’t have to look very far to know this is true, just read through his blog and see how the love shines through.

The first time Rob and I visited his local used bookstore together was a magical experience. It took mere seconds for my way of thinking to shift. This haven, this treasure trove, was unlike anything I’d ever seen, and in its hometown quaintness, infinitely more beautiful than anything a corporate store could ever hope to offer me. The floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, filled to the point of bursting with more books than I could ever hope to read in a lifetime, brought an enormous grin to my face. The quiet and welcoming atmosphere made me feel at home immediately. And while having a $20 in your pocket won’t get you very far at a corporate store, Catnap will make anyone feel like a millionaire with their amazingly low prices (the $1 paperbacks are my weaknesses, as are the trade paperback shelves). This is not to knock corporate bookstores; they have thoroughly legitimate reasons for the prices they charge. And while it’s true that some of the books at a used bookstore are not always in pristine condition, I’ve always had a mild fear of ruining a brand new book. This doesn’t mean that I won’t buy new books, or that aged pages should be treated with any less care than their newer counterparts, it may just mean that I have very strange neuroses. If anything, the wear and tear that used books may sometimes have shows what rich histories they’ve accumulated. And while some people of my former mentality may turn their noses up at a secondhand book, I for one embrace them in all their pre-owned glory. Sometimes, you can even find bits of their previous history tucked away in the pages. For example, on my most recent visit to Catnap, I found a copy of Nikos Kazantzakis’ “Zorba the Greek,” and when I picked it up off of the shelf, an old bus ticket was peeking out of the top, acting as a bookmark.

I don’t need bright lights, lattes, or plush furniture, all I need is a way to gain access to books. I’m not quite against corporate bookstores or the amenities they provide; I’ll still visit them from time to time. But used bookstores have shown me another way into the literary world, and I’ll happily sit in a corner, either on a stool or the floor, and read to my heart’s content.

About The Guest:

Jackie Vazquez is my girlfriend. She doesn’t really have all those “cool” links to hand out like past guests. But she’s really cool. She’s also busy working and going to grad school to be a school psychologist. That’s why I wrote up this bio myself. I don’t want to rant and rave about her too much since you might like her more than me, if I were to keep talking :P

Aged Pages: The Hidden Gems

I was discussing books with a friend recently and the conversation brought on an interesting idea for this week’s Aged Pages post. I know there’s much for me to cover in this series, and I could save this topic for later on, but I felt like getting it out in the open when I was still thinking about it.

There are many reasons I love to shop at used bookstores. These range from the pricing to the employees and to the unique selection that can vary from one store to the next. I’ll revisit these topics in the weeks to come. For today I’d like to let you all know one great reason I buy from used stores. The hidden gems!

__________

I’ve found my fair share of hidden gems over the years. What hasn’t happened often at all, is finding a great random book at a place like Barnes & Noble. And what do I mean by a hidden gem?

To clarify, when I say “hidden gem” I mean a book that I found by a not so well-known author, a not so well-known title by even a well-known author, or just some random book that you might not have chosen if you had found it on a B&N shelf.

I have a few reasons why I don’t shop (when I can help it) at a store like B&N. A big reason is that I can’t afford books from there. When a hardcover is well over $20 and a mass market paperback is around $7-$10 I just can’t do that. I’d rather wait around a year for a book to possibly make its way to my local bookstore. Once it’s there it’ll be anywhere from $1-$5 depending on the format (pb or hc). For me this works out well because for the price of one new book I can get 10, 20, or even more at times, used books. My collection thrives because of this. (quick disclaimer: I’m not here to discuss why I think some book prices are absurd. I don’t like them, but I have an understanding of why they are “high” to a certain extent. I just like saving my money when there’s an alternative.)

I’m sure you’d like to know some of the gems I’ve found. There are many, and every book I own has its own story of how I came about buying it (one day I’ll go through the stacks and bore someone for hours talking about every one of them ;) ).

First up: Extreme Ironing

This is a book that I bought for $2 simply because I found the concept hilarious. It is labeled as a “humour” book (yes it’s from a UK publisher). I honestly thought this book was just a joke. I thought someone had the concept in mind and set about photographing it and wrote text to go along with it. I was wrong. While I was reading it, I googled the “sport.” It really exists. That just makes this find even better. I don’t think I would have spent the £7.99 cover price if I had found it in a big name store though. It wasn’t worth that much to me, even after reading it. Two bucks seemed reasonable.

Second: The Lost Writings of Jim Morrison, Wilderness Volume 1

I know what you’re thinking. How could this really be a hidden gem? Jim Morrison is a rock n’ roll GOD!!! He is. I’m not basing this on the “Lost”  part in the title Though, I think some people might overlook his writing outside of the Doors lyrics. At the time I found this book, I was just getting into the Doors. I had just read “Riders On The Storm” an autobiography by the Doors’ drummer John Densmore and wanted to read more of Jim’s words.

This was my first glimpse into Morrison’s words outside of the songs I was listening to. I enjoyed every minute of it. These poems are strange, hard to get, but beautiful in a way only Jim could make them. This is another $13 (1988 pricing)  I wouldn’t have spent in B&N though. Why is that? Because I have gotten a good amount more books on the Doors/Morrison for cheaper than that TOTAL.

Lastly (since I don’t have space for too much more before I bore you): The Potsdam Tradition

What the hell is this book? Well it’s a book about the college I graduated from with my Bachelors in Creative Writing. It’s the reason I can sit on my ass all day and type up the random words that you are reading now.

The book is a history of the college up until the 1960s (it was published in 1966). I was surprised to see this in my local store to be honest. Until I was looking for SUNY schools offering a B.A. in Creative Writing, I never heard of Potsdam, NY….let alone “the North Country.” That’s why I grabbed it. I wanted to know more about the college I attended. I also thought “wow, when will I get a chance to read this book again?”

It wasn’t the cheapest purchase that day, being that it was $8 ($5.95 cover price, 1966,) but the history books in my store are a bit more  money. I didn’t mind much. It’s not very easy to find online from the quick search I just did. Amazon has it for as little as $6…but when would I ever have seen it online and been like “I should buy that book”? Seeing it in person in a used book setting solidified my decisions to purchase it.

__________

Here was just a small selection of cool, sometimes random books I’ve found. These were only from one store too. While I’m not stating that you can’t find a great random book at a place like Barnes & Noble, or that you can’t buy an author who you’ve never heard of before for full price (that is how they make money to make another book), I’m hoping I gave you the sense that there’s less of a risk factor in taking the chance on a used book. Also in going to a B&N I normally have a title in mind and don’t stray from that book. The only times I do give myself the chance to find a hidden B&N gem is when I look in the bargain section. I have on occasion found some there for around $5.

Are there any books you’ve taken a chance with, even if you’ve NEVER heard of them before? Was it a good decision or a bad one?
